Mar de Jade is a beachfront retreat and wellness center 90 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta in Chacala. It was founded in 1982 by Dr. Laura del Valle, and two of her siblings. Dr. Laura began offering free medical care to local families and soon set up a non-profit clinic in the larger nearby farming town of Las Varas. Over the 25 years she operated the clinic, it provided free services to over 14,000 families. You can see the founder tell the inspiring story of Mar de Jade here. Dr. Laura and her daughter give a hilarious history of Mar de Jade during our visit. You can take a very inspiring tour of their organic farm and trade schools. Their vision of how to help better the lives of the local residents seems to be ever expanding. Mar de Jade designates a portion of guest proceeds to support its non-profit programs.
There are three yoga shalas with ocean views. They include mats and props so no need to bring yours from home. There is also a spa on the premises with absolutely wonderful therapists.
Mar de Jade has an organic farm that supplies many of the products for Mar de Jade’s delicious meals. Special diets including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free can be accommodated. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions when you book your retreat.
Two yoga classes a day include TriYoga flows for all levels, mudras, yoga nidra, pranayama and meditation. Between classes you can relax at the pool or the beach, indulge in spa services, or take an excursion. Available excursions include surfing, hiking to caves or ancient petroglyphs, snorkeling, horseback riding, boating, visiting a traditional Mexican market or the organic farm.
The is also an opportunity to experience a guided ceremony in a Temazcal, an ancient Aztec sweat lodge. This Mexican tradition has been kept alive since pre-Hispanic times as a means to purify the body and mind. Why do we keep going back to Mar de Jade?
This will be our 4th retreat at Mar de Jade. Past participants agree that we have never found a better place. You just can't beat practicing yoga overlooking the ocean, listening to the waves, clearing your mind, rejuvenating your body.
Also, Mar de Jade is a very special place, and our retreat helps support all the wonderful work they do. The founder, Dr. Laura, went into the jungle to find a way to serve the local people. First she started a medical clinic, and brought supplies from the US. She built the retreat center to employ people. The organic farm also serves to train local residents how to grow sustainable crops, rather than a product crop that has seasons, which lead to long periods of unemployment.
Dr. Laura sees a need then goes into action. Adjacent to the farm they created trade schools to teach employable skills to the young people with limited education. There is a carpentry school and most of the furniture at the center is made by the carpentry students. They have a sewing school to teach young women, often teenage mothers, a way to earn money while home with their children. When we visited there were young children playing in the sewing room. Seeing a need for daycare so women can earn money for their families, they opened a day care center.
They also established El Jardín, a Montessori-Waldorf inspired pre-K through 6th grade school offering a progressive education to the local children of Chacala. They provide a full educational scholarships to every family in need because they believe quality education is a right, not a privilege. Currently, 70% of all local children attend the school and benefit from its rich academic program with an emphasis on art, music and mindfulness.
Testimonial from Bethany:
As I travelled to last years retreat I wondered why I was returning to the same location again when there are so many places in the world?
I wondered what was wrong with me? Why did my body feel like this? Is this how fibromyalgia begins? My patients explain it like how I feel.
And my mind, what is going on? It hurt just like my body, feeling wrung and twisted, pulled and drained.
I picked up a copy of the book Emotional Detox on the way here, maybe that’s what I need?
It took 30 minutes from arriving to remember why I came back, because this is perfection for the mind body and soul. I stopped reading the recipe for Emotional Detox 3 days later and realized I was living the detox in a way that isn’t captured in any book.
My mind and body unwound, opened and renewed. It’s no single aspect but the whole and I value the deep healing it brings. The environment is healing, with the ocean, food, care, love for humanity. The company is inspiring, motivating, caring, and there to reach their arms together to lift and hold me, share their life learnings, and uplift each other. The yoga is of course phenomenal, accented further by the ocean waves sounds, breeze blowing through the tree canopy and birds flying through the trees. The in breath encompasses all of these aspects, flows through me, heals all that has forgotten this peace, over and over again. The exhale releases, over and over again, until the difference is undeniable to any body.
It stays this way for quite some time, this deep reset that I acknowledge as deeply needed self care essential for my body to remain healthy and highly functional while engulfed in daily life strain and stressors. Yes change the stressors, but learning is the whole process of becoming.
Yes yoga always brings us back to this of balance. But a week of yoga with TYB family at Mar de Jade is entirely different level of saying yes to honoring and accepting the absolute complete healing this practice offers to the self and soul spirit.
